UV LED : From UV Lamp Replacement to New Applications

UV LED applications have entered a strong growth period, with multiple companies that are shifting now from old and expensive UV lamp to compact and energy efficient UV LED. 2014 market reach $90M and we are expecting a total UV LED market to reach $520M by 2019. This growth is explained by two reasons! Now, the growth is coming from the replacement of UV lamp by UV LED… But a new growth engine is under preparation, with the new applications that are enabled by UV LED, from industrial, medical to consumer applications. And it will bring a minimum of +10% of additional business by 2020, which is huge!

Yole Développement : Can you introduce Phoseon Technology, its product lines in the UV LED field, associated history and current activities? 

Phoseon: Phoseon is a privately held LED technology company located in Hillsboro, Oregon. YD: As the pioneer and one of the leading manufacturers of UV LED curing systems, can you explain us dynamics of this business, added value of UV LEDs and status of this market?

Phoseon: It is an accepted fact for many industries that LED lamps provide many advantages including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness, smaller form factor, and faster on/off switching. Those advantages are also important in curing applications.

The business dynamics are moving from a mercury replacement market as new applications utilize UV LED strengths. OEMs, machine builders, and end-users are using LEDs to accomplish tasks not possible with other curing technologies. There are over 50 UV LED lamp suppliers worldwide ensuring a competitive industry that meets application requirements.
